students who have difficulty within a traditional school setting, The Joy D.
Rice School provides an important resource: the opportunity to earn a diploma through
a comprehensive academic program designed to renew a commitment to education.
The enrollment allows this accredited special educational program to maintain
small classes and a low student teacher ratio. Within this environment, the
curriculum addresses each student's intellectual, social, and emotional needs. ACHIEVEMENT - The Joy D. Rice School offers a comprehensive academic curriculum that considers the student's individual abilities in an effort to instill a newfound enthusiasm for learning. In compliance with all the State of Connecticut graduation requirements, the program includes a full range of courses meeting today's high educational standards as well as tomorrow's workplace challenges. SUPPORT - Helping JDRS students gain confidence, build motivation, and see new possibilities means maintaining a close-knit atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding, based upon clearly defined expectations for achievement and appropriate behavior. All students receive regular group and individual counseling in sessions with a part-time school psychologist with frequent participation from parents and family members. OPPORTUNITY - To prepare for future employment, JDRS students participate in a variety of hands-on activities, internships, and volunteer efforts that help them make a successful transition from school to career. Vocational education includes, wood working, small gas engine repair, computer applications and desktop publishing. The JDRS Life Skills course introduces student's to issues and situations they will encounter as employees - decision making, problem solving, organizing techniques, and independent living. Students receive credit for work-study programs.
