A New Vision for Science Education: NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS 

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. They often wonder why and are eager to explore how things work. As adults, we remember learning science by reading a textbook or listening to a teacher’s lecture. The Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS) was adopted by Connecticut in November 2015. These standards have dramatically changed how science is taught and learned. This link to the chart highlights some of the key differences between a traditional science classroom and an NGSS classroom. 
Winchester Public Schools provides students with rich, inquiry science learning experiences from Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade. With NGSS, students use the Science and Engineering Practices link to figure out and build their own understanding of the science content (Disciplinary Core Ideas link). Students do science in Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering at all grade levels. To develop a deep working knowledge of science in real-world contexts, students span across discipline areas using Crosscutting Concepts link. Winchester Public Schools encourages students to grow like a scientist and citizens by thinking critically, analyzing information, and applying knowledge to complex problems. Winchester Public Schools is providing the foundation of skills to enter future careers of the student’s choice, including careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The Gifted and Talented Program at the Pearson School was established in the Fall of 2018. The program serves students in the areas of arts and academics; specifically Reading, Writing, STEAM, Music, and Art. The top 5% of students in grades four through six are invited to participate. Selection is based on a combination of standardized assessment scores, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation. Each student takes a class in their area(s) of their expertise for 45-minutes once per week.
