Winchester Board of Education

BELIEFS, FOCUS AREAS, AND ASSESSMENT STANDARDS

2017-2018

The Winchester Board of Education has devised goals and focus areas that directly align to district and school level improvement plans. Each plan supports connectedness, instructional excellence, and develops a performance-focused school system.

INSTRUCTION

BELIEF STATEMENT - We believe quality instruction results in high academic performance for all students.

FOCUS AREAS:

a.       Update curricular scope and sequence, instruction, and assessment to reflect Common Core State Standards and expectations.

b.       Increase student performance on various forms of assessments

c.        Provide professional development for all faculty and staff to meet needs of all students

ASSESSMENT OF FOCUS AREAS:

a.       Three times per year, BOE will receive a report on student progress on standardized and local assessments.

b.       BOE will receive an initial analysis of curriculum, instruction and professional development by October 2017 followed by two additional updates for throughout the school year.

COMMUNITY & CLIMATE

BELIEF STATEMENT - We believe positive community relationships beyond the school setting builds support for education. Additionally, we believe an effective culture nurtures relationships, develops a sense of belonging, and compassionately supports enthusiastic and innovative learning experiences.

FOCUS AREAS:

a.   Build partnerships with organizations within the community to expand opportunities for learning. 

b.   Develop a plan for communication between the district and its constituents, including town leaders.

c.    Develop a system to collect baseline data on the parent, student and staff satisfaction to inform a DRAFT Climate Report for the State of the Schools Address in January 2018.

ASSESSMENT OF FOCUS AREAS:

a.    Routine communication methods to inform the community of school and district level information (social media, State of School Address, recognition events, community organizations, monthly open conversation with the public, district partners).

b.   Climate Surveys - Student, Staff, and Family – issued annually

OPERATIONAL GOALS

BELIEF STATEMENT - We believe responsible, fiscal, and operational management of district resources promotes support for education.

FOCUS AREAS:

a.   Public communication of district data including financial and funding source information.

b.   Identify opportunities for cost savings while maintaining the quality of educational experience  for all students.

c.    Assess the quality and capacity of our physical plants and align to future enrollment and program needs.

ASSESSMENT OF FOCUS AREAS:

a.    Monthly and quarterly financial reports and potential cost saving/expenditures to the BOE

b.    Routine facilities walkthroughs to ensure proper maintenance and upkeep

c.    Conduct and share facilities’ review to determine the physical/structural integrity and capacity of all school buildings based on projected enrollment/district needs.
